Smallest city car: i10, Picanto or Aygo X in town?

Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto or Toyota Aygo X: Belgian prices, length, boot, turning circle and fuel use compared to pick the smallest car for city life.

ByLéa7 min read

For a car that lives in town, the Kia Picanto is the easiest to park and the Hyundai i10 the cheapest of the three, at €16,949. The Toyota Aygo X, the only hybrid here, uses the least fuel but costs €4,041 more than the i10. At 8,000 km a year, that gap does not pay for itself at the pump.

How much do the i10, Picanto and Aygo X cost in Belgium?

We checked the entry prices on the three brands' Belgian websites on 2 October 2026.

ModelEntry priceEngineGearboxManufacturer warranty
Hyundai i10€16,9491.0 petrol, 67 hpmanual or automated manual5 years, unlimited mileage
Kia Picanto€17,7901.0 petrolmanual or automated manual7 years or 150,000 km
Toyota Aygo X€20,9901.5 hybrid, 116 hpautomaticup to 10 years with servicing in the network
Dacia Sandero (benchmark)€13,990TCe 100 petrolmanualup to 7 years with servicing in the network

Two details matter more than the table. The Toyota Aygo X price is for the Play trim with a €1,720 discount already deducted, in an offer valid until 31 October 2026. And Kia Belgium sold the Picanto from €14,490 throughout September, with all bonuses and trade-in support included. In this class the list price is a starting point: always ask for the offer of the month before comparing.

Which one is easiest to park?

The Picanto. It is the shortest and, above all, the narrowest.

Length3.605 m3.67 m3.776 m
Width without mirrors1.595 m1.68 m1.74 m

Seventeen centimetres separate the Picanto from the Aygo X in length. It sounds like little, but it is the difference between a parallel-parking gap you try and one you let go, and on a street where bays are not marked on the ground, it also decides whether the car behind can still get out. Width weighs more day to day: with 14.5 cm less than the Aygo X, the Picanto leaves over seven centimetres more on each side to open a door in a lock-up or an underground car park.

The Aygo X has grown. Its hybrid facelift stretched the front overhang by 76 mm to house the powertrain, and it keeps the 4.7 m turning radius that Le Moniteur Automobile already noted at launch. So it turns as tightly as the Picanto, with a higher driving position.

As for the label itself, "micro city car" matches no official category: we explain why in our article on what a city car is.

Between the Picanto and the Aygo X: 17 cm in length and 14.5 cm in width.

Does the Aygo X hybrid pay for itself at the pump?

No, not at this mileage.

Toyota quotes 3.7 l/100 km. For the i10, the Belgian dealer group Van Mossel lists 5.0 l/100 km with the manual gearbox. The gap is 1.3 litres per hundred. Over 8,000 km a year, a typical mileage for a car that hardly ever leaves town, that makes 104 litres. At the maximum price of €2.058 per litre we recorded in early September for Super 95 E10 petrol, the saving comes to €214 a year. It would take nearly nineteen years to wipe out the €4,041 purchase gap.

The objection is a fair one: in urban traffic, a hybrid does far better than its combined figure against a conventional petrol car, as we showed in our article on the city car that uses the least fuel in town. So let us double the advantage. That still leaves more than nine years.

The Aygo X earns its place another way. It offers 116 hp where the two Korean cars top out at around 65, and a true automatic gearbox at no extra cost. If you take the ring road every day or hate the clutch in traffic jams, it makes sense. If you only want to spend less, it does not.

Are the rear seats any use?

For children and short trips, yes. For two adults all the way to the coast, it is a punishment.

The i10 is the only one whose Belgian page lists a four-seat or five-seat layout. At 1.68 m wide, it is also the one where three people in the back remain conceivable for a few kilometres. The number of approved seats varies by version in this class: check it on the certificate of conformity (the EU document that comes with the car) before signing, especially if you are counting on the car for the school run.

Should you look at the Sandero or the Swift instead?

If length is not an issue, it is a fair question. The Dacia Sandero starts at €13,990 on the Belgian price list, €2,959 less than an i10, with a 100 hp engine and a boot from another class. It is over 4 metres long. Our head-to-head Dacia Sandero vs Renault Clio details its real cost.

The Suzuki Swift, at 3.86 m, sits between the two worlds with mild-hybrid assistance. We could not read its Belgian price on the brand's website on 2 October, so we do not quote it.

Remaining warranty matters as much as the entry price: 5 years at Hyundai, 7 at Kia, up to 10 at Toyota.

Does the tax change from one region to another?

Yes, and it does not favour the same car everywhere.

In Brussels, the registration tax (taxe de mise en circulation, or TMC, paid once when the car is first registered in your name) depends on engine power, and the Aygo X's 85 kW in principle put it one band above the two Korean cars. In Flanders, the formula rests on CO₂ and the Euro standard, which favours the hybrid. Since July 2025 Wallonia has applied a calculation that combines power, mass and emissions. The amounts stay modest in all three cases for cars of this size, but run the simulation on your region's tax portal before deciding over a few hundred euros.

Before signing, five things to check at the dealership:

  • the discounted price of the month, not the list price;
  • the number of seats shown on the certificate of conformity;
  • the gearbox actually fitted, automated manual or automatic, after a test drive in town;
  • the servicing conditions that extend the warranty;
  • the width with mirrors unfolded, to compare with your lock-up.

Frequently asked questions

The Kia Picanto, at 3.605 m long and 1.595 m wide. The i10 measures 3.67 m by 1.68 m according to Hyundai Belgium, and the Aygo X hybrid 3.776 m by 1.74 m. In width, nearly 15 cm separate the Picanto from the Aygo X.

They share their underpinnings and a 1.0 three-cylinder petrol engine. The Picanto is 6.5 cm shorter and covered for 7 years or 150,000 km; the i10 is wider, listed €841 cheaper in Belgium and covered for 5 years with unlimited mileage.

Yes. Since its facelift it is sold only as a 116 hp self-charging hybrid, with no plug and an automatic gearbox as standard. Toyota Belgium quotes 3.7 to 3.9 l/100 km and 85 to 89 g of CO₂ per kilometre.

The Picanto, narrowly: 255 litres against 252 for the i10 and 231 for the Aygo X. None of the three swallows a pushchair and the weekly shop at once without folding the rear seat.

The i10 and the Picanto offer an automated manual gearbox (AMT), cheaper than a true automatic but slower to change gear. The Aygo X is automatic across the range, which explains part of its price.

Yes. Bought new, all three meet the latest Euro standard and enter the low-emission zones (LEZ) of Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent without restriction. Wallonia has no low-emission zone.

For the same money, a four-year-old supermini from the class above gives more space, but less remaining warranty and 40 to 50 cm more to park. If the car lives on the street and covers few kilometres, the new small car keeps the size advantage.
